The American literature and culture sub-programme is linked to the teaching and research activities at the North American Department of the University of Debrecen. The naming is the result of a conscious decision: Canada and Mexico are also considered as part of North America. In addition to “traditional” topics in the field of American studies (literature, history, film, popular culture, minorities), the strengths of the sub-programme also include the history of American philosophy and politics, travel literature, Afro-American and American Indian culture and women’s history, as well as the study of inter-American and US-Hungarian relations. All faculty members teaching in the sub-programme have completed at least one Fulbright scholarship, and we also welcome a Fulbright Visiting Professor at our department every year. Our students have good chances when applying for scholarships in Europe and in the United States. In the framework of the Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship programme started a few years ago, the number of international students is continuously increasing. Talented and interested students are also involved into teaching, which makes it easier for them to find employment later in their professional careers. Agustin Cadena, our permanent visiting professor from Mexico is a highly esteemed creative writer as well. With questions or research topic proposals please contact Dr. Tibor Glant, head of the sub-programme (Dr. Tibor Glant); the research areas of individual faculty members are available under their names on the official website of the department: North American Department.
