Topics covered during the semester include: ethical aspects of research and academic integrity (the ALLEA code); innovation management, aspects of managing intellectual property; research collaboration and technology transfer; the measurability and measuring of academic activity and performance; publication venues and how to evaluate them; gauging aspects of academic publications; visibility and networking; basic research and applied research. |

Description of the study module: This workshop seminar is designed to help doctoral students improve their professional presentation skills. Conducted in the spirit of collegiality, it aims to improve the self-confidence of students. It is based primarily on active student participation, ranging from making comments and giving advice to each other through chairing sessions in simulated conference situations to giving papers. The course concludes with a professional presentation – either at the biennial conference of the Hungarian Society for the Study of English (HUSSE) or, in alternate years, at some other conference. The conference presentation serves as the course exam. A discussion of successful oratorical strategies is followed by a review of the do’s and don’t’s of presenting, the preparation and discussion of the abstracts and rehearsals of the individual presentations in 5, 10 and 15 minutes. A late session in January serves as the dress rehearsal for the conference, featuring the full presentation of each student. |

Description of the study module: The aim of this course is to develop students’ skills in writing book reviews about scholarly works for scholarly journals. Group work will include studying and discussing reviews from various journals, identifying the audience and the aim of reviews, structuring the text, and avoiding typical mistakes. Each student will need to continuously work on a review during the semester. Each student is expected to produce a publishable book review to get credits for the course. Students are encouraged to help and support one another with their comments. |

Description of the study module: Key modules of the doctoral training programme, tutorial seminars provide a framework for the extended and continuous work of the doctoral student and their supervisor. It is during these tutorials that consultations about the progress and difficulties of the student’s research work, the academic and technical difficulties arising in the course of the writing of the dissertation, as well as publication opportunities and venues, possibilities of conference participation, study trips or research grants. It is also these tutorials that offer the supervisor the chance to monitor the general well-being of the student in their professional care. |

Description of the study module: This study unit is designed as an introduction to the basic principles, conceptual frameworks, presuppositions of the major critical/theoretical schools and tendencies of a particular period within modernity. In the course of close reading sessions, students acquire a comprehensive knowledge of the ideological contexts and conceptual frameworks that govern critical discourse in the given period, while they also investigate the extent to which the normative criteria of a certain kind of critical discourse might be valid in the interpretation of texts from other periods and are capable of engaging in a dialogue with different pracices of establishing critical norms and presuppositions. |

Conference participation is important not only because of the delivery of the paper, but also because such events play a key role in the academic socialisation of our students: offering opportunities for networking, they may be the places where the seeds of collaborative projects and academic events are sown. Description of the research unit: This research unit is the third checkpoint in the process of writing the dissertation, following the Topic presentation and the Hypothesis defence. In the chapter submitted for Chapter defence, the doctoral student demonstrates their ability to produce scholarly text of the level and complexity required from doctoral dissertations. This entails engaging in a dialogue with the existing critical literature, familiarity with the necessary contexts, the application of theoretical and conceptual discourses as well as analytical skills. During the Chapter defence, the student’s performance is evaluated by the board approved of by the SLCS; the student is expected to react to the comments coming from the board. |

Description of the research unit: This research unit is the most important checkpoint in the process of writing the dissertation. In the hypothesis, the doctoral student delineates – within the parameters specified in the doctoral programme – the main objectives of the proposed dissertation, the corpus chosen for analysis, the theoretical framework, the analytical strategies, as well as the structure of the proposed dissertation, broken down into chapters. The hypothesis also includes the proposed timeline of writing the dissertation. The hypothesis is evaluated by the board approved by the section; the student reacts to the comments coming from the board. |
